Simply gorgeous

Archana of `Get Gorgeous' fame was in town for the launch of Sidney Sladen's new line

Night of style Archana at Pasha

"I never wore makeup, not even heels," says Archana. And yet the glass slipper fit her perfectly at the Channel V Get Gorgeous contest, catapulting the Kolkata college girl onto the catwalks of India's best.

"There I was walking the ramp at the Rome Fashion Week for Suneet Varma, and then in Paris and Singapore, working for the best of them: Rohit Bal, Malini Ramani, Rajesh Pratap Singh."

Quick fame does change things. Archana learnt that early enough. Finding the vibes from co-contestants turning cold once eliminations started at `Get Gorgeous'. It's changed her too. "I mean look at my shoes," she says, showing her stylish pink heels. "You have to adapt, but I am still the same person."

Archana had never planned on being a model, despite receiving offers since the age of fifteen. "But you know, deep within our hearts we are all posers. Making pretty faces at the mirror," she says.

And so are a million others, every second person she meets wants to be a model. And why not, it is an "attractive proposition." Archana is not threatened by the next Get Gorgeous find, or the one after that. Or by the other contest winners, whose stardom has the life span of a shooting star. "Good for him or her!" she says. In a city of aspirants why grudge someone an easy break? "When all of that simmers down, you have to prove your mettle. You can't jump the gun," says Archana.

One year after the contest, Archana Vijaya now hosts `Get Gorgeous'. A role that she had to audition for. "Now that I am on the other side, I literally act like mommy, telling them what to wear." she says.

Archana was in town for the Club Fashion Nite at Pasha, which showcased Sidney Sladen's spring-summer line. With the nightclub packed to capacity, one had to peep through legs and climb on sofas to get a glimpse of the clothes.

Short halter dresses in patterns from the Sixties were followed by ghagra-cholis. And a range of gorgeous dresses with sequins and in unusual colours like bright sap green, and peppermint blue sequins on beige. Poncho style dresses in chiffon with sequins worn over matching shorts and bikini tops looked great on models who strutted along the bar counter. But you would need those gorgeous long legs to wear these creations. The crowd seemed to love the collection, or maybe it was Simran Chandok who was cheered on with catcalls at each appearance.
