We record with regret the death in Madras on Monday [July 22] of Dr. (Mrs.) Muthulakshmi Reddi, the veteran social reformer and emancipator of women. Mrs. Reddi, who was 82, was a pioneer in the fight for social and political uplift of women and her most notable achievement was the abolition of the Devadasi system in the composite State of Madras. All her life she was fighting one battle or another and she was never tired of espousing the cause of the sick and the poor, the orphans and the fallen and destitute women. Mrs. Reddi was born in Pudukottah in 1886. She entered public life in 1917 with a campaign for women’s rights. She fought for the rights of women in the legislature half a century ago when very few people came forward to espouse their cause.
