If your list of troubles include haunted houses, scary villains, and unsolved mysteries, then you better call, “Scooby Doo, where are you?”
Scooby Doo is an animated dog and the star of the cartoon series “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!”. The cartoon features four teenagers, who along with Scooby Doo, solve mysteries involving ghosts, masked villains and hidden treasures.
Here are some answers to help you get to know Scooby Doo better.
How old is Scooby Doo?
Scooby Doo’s birthday is the day the first episode of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! aired on CBS network in the U.S. — September 13, 1969. Going by that date, Scooby Doo turns 48 this year! But he doesn’t look a day older than he was in that first episode!
Why is Scooby Doo a Great Dane?
When the creators of the show, Joe Ruby, Ken Spears, and Iwao Takamoto first came up with the characters, they modelled them after popular comic characters, Archie and his friends. The dog, they decided, would be a large sheepdog, the same breed as Jughead’s dog, Hot Dog. But Fred Silverman, then the head of children’s programming at CBS, found the similarity too much (incidentally, Too Much was the name of the dog). So, it was decided to change the breed to another large dog — a Great Dane.
Why is he called Scooby Doo?
As mentioned before, the character of the scared Great Dane was named Too Much. Moreover, the dog was just a side-kick, and not the lead of the show. While the show was being finalised, Fred Silverman happened to hear a song by the famous singer Frank Sinatra. The song had a refrain (lines that are repeated) that went “doo-be-doo-be-doo...” Inspiration struck! Fred Silverman renamed the dog Scooby Doo and made him the central character of the show.
How does Scooby Doo talk?
As a dog, Scooby Doo is unique because he can speak! He speaks broken English, and to make it sound like a dog’s speech, the letter ‘R’ is added before the words and noises. Try it for yourself! Rat rounds reas y!
Dooby dos
Though Scooby Doo is a Great Dane, his character has features that are unlike one. Scooby Doo has bowed legs, double chin, and a sloped back, that add to his comical appearance.
He is scared easily, but can be lured into chasing villains with a dog treat or a cookie snack.
His catch phrase is “Scooby-Dooby-Doo!” which he says at the end of every mystery.
Over the span of several series and episodes, Scooby Doo, his nephew Scrappy Doo, and his best friend, Shaggy, a human, have had several jobs — from being detectives-on-hire, construction workers, race car drivers, journalists to gym teachers, they have done it all!
