Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 21 accused the ruling Congress in Rajasthan of promoting corruption and nepotism, and pushing farmers into a debt trap by betraying their trust and failing to fulfil the promises made to them. Mr. Modi said the Congress had caused people’s suffering by handing them over to criminals and rioters.

Addressing three elections rallies during his whirlwind tour of the State, Mr. Modi said the Congress had cheated farmers and common people by increasing unemployment and inflation with its “flawed policies”. “Congress is a symbol of the evils afflicting India, preventing it from becoming a developed nation,” he said.

Mr. Modi addressed rallies in Baran, Kota and Karauli districts before heading to Jaipur, where he participated in a road show. He said the Congress’ support to criminal elements had boosted the morale of anti-social forces. “Every section of society, including women, farmers, traders and youths, wants to get rid of the Congress,” he said.

The Prime Minister warned that Rajasthan would once again become a ‘Bimaru’ (a reference to poor economic conditions) State as a result of “the land of warriors” being turned into an “open field for rioters”. The ruling party’s leaders were filling their lockers with ill-gotten money and leaving people at the mercy of anti-social elements, he added, targeting the Congress on law and order in the State.

“The magician can do any type of black magic but it will not work on the people of Rajasthan. The Congress government will be wiped out on December 3,” Mr. Modi said, in a reference to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who belongs to a family of magicians.

Mr. Modi said the BJP, if elected to power, would bring all those involved in crimes against women to justice. “Can the Congress assure your safety? Women live in fear every day. Parents and elders are worried if their children will return home safely,” he said.

In the Walled City of Jaipur, Mr. Modi held a road show amid tight security in the evening. A huge crowd gathered on both sides of roads to welcome the Prime Minister as his entourage traversed through Bapu Bazaar, Badi Chaupad, and Johari Bazaar before the rally culminated at Sanganeri Gate.
