Friendship over frisbee

Bond over a fun tournament on February 4 and 5 at Auroville

Want to spend your weekend watching a spirited frisbee match among women, men and children in a lush green environment? The India Hat Tournament promises you just that. For the last seven years, players from across the country have been heading to Auroville for this fun-filled affair every first weekend of February.

Ultimate Frisbee has been growing in India, because it has given players the opportunity to travel internationally. It has evolved from a sport that was hardly played to one that is being practised across many states for the sense of bonding that it brings.

“And, it will continue to grow and become more competitive as well,” says Smiti Arpi, a frisbee player from Auroville, who has been with the Hat Tournament team for seven years.

The tournament not only pushes players competitively, but focusses on team spirit. “It emphasises on bringing players together to make new connections and learn new things. It is not just about winning the tournament.”

Frisbee is different from other sports. It not only celebrates athleticism, competition, speed and agility, but also camaraderie, sportsmanship, and the ability to be positive and helpful to the other team. And, it discourages team members from being abusive or physical.

It is a non-contact sport and the only sport that is self-refereed in the international level as well.

“You have to be honest enough to call your own faults and accept somebody else’s faults. All calls are resolved between players, and there are no outside referees, who decide right and wrong.”

The tournament features 16 teams. The participants have registered as individuals. “They include men, women and children. That gives a level playing field for everyone. We have both the advanced and the beginners’ level players on the same match. It is a lot more interactive. It gives you an opportunity to meet new people and change your game style.” This year, because of the increasing popularity of the sport among children, the organisers have changed the age limit to 12 and above. During February every year, there is a tangible excitement and buzz around the tournament. “Within Auroville, there is a positive attitude to frisbee because the place aims to bring people together and bridge gaps.”

Other attractions will be Auroville’s food stalls. The participants will be given adorable gifts from the Auroville units. And, a group dinner awaits them on the last day.

The tournament is open to all and is not ticketed. It will be held on February 4 and 5, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. For details, visit ultimate.auroville.com.
