 Eka The Band

Eka The Band

Eka The Band is the fulfilment of a dream for musician Ranjini Jose. The five-piece band will take the stage for the first time in Kochi on November 11. “We are bringing to you the music that we love to sing and play. I have been giving stage performances for nearly 18 years. It’s time I perform those songs that are close to my heart. If you ask the genre of the band, I would say it’s my genre! There will be Hindustani, Carnatic, folk, Indie pop, rock, ghazals, melodies... We will sing Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, English and in other languages too,” she says.

Ranjini points out that they will present only cover versions of songs for the time being and will come out with original tracks soon. “We need some time to work on our own songs and I promise you that it will be a happy track,” says Ranjini, a veteran in the field of independent music having brought out her own productions quite early in her career.

Ranjini is the lone vocalist of the band and others are Ralfin Stephen (piano and keyboards), Aswin Aryan (lead guitars), Samuel Jacob (bass guitars) and Akhil Babu (drums). “These musicians are accomplished in their own ways. Although we are featuring covers, almost all songs that we sing will have our stamp.”

Supreme power

As for the name Eka, Ranjini says that it stands for something that she believes spiritually. “It comes from the mantra, ‘Ekam evam advatheeyam’, which says that there is only one power. My parents belong to different faiths and they have never insisted that I should follow a particular religion. I believe in one supreme power that unites everything in the universe,” she adds.

She is quick to mention that the band is not going to compete with any other band.

“I respect all bands, all original tracks... I was never in the race as a musician and Eka The Band too is non-competitive. We are here to make people feel good with our music,” she signs off.

Eka The Band will perform at JTPac, Tripunithura, on November 11, 6.30 pm.
