RJ-turned-director Nelson, who debuts with Oru Naal Koothu , was inspired to write the film after he noticed a sudden change among friends, as they began to consider getting married. Nelson feels it’s a phase where people change drastically, and felt it would be interesting to make a movie around that period. “Our society is obsessed with the idea of marriage. It’s evident from the way society judges an unmarried person. ‘What’s wrong with him? Is he suffering from a love fail?’ These are questions we often hear. People disapprove of late marriages, and definitely of those who don’t want to get married. So, I wanted to explore the idea of marriage being forced on us.”
Oru Naal Koothu stars Attakathi Dinesh and Mia George, and is inspired by a phase in the mid-twenties when ‘jobs, home loans and cars become words one uses more than fun’. It traces the period before a couple gets married, and the chaos during this phase.
Of all the challenges a debutant filmmaker faces, Nelson admits it was most difficult to juggle so many characters in the film. “The film revolves around eight main characters and how their lives change, related to a wedding. A wedding doesn’t change the lives of the couple alone; it affects many more, both positively and negat ively. My film explores the lives of a few such.”
