Arijit Singh, one of the most popular singers in Bollywood currently, has crooned his first Tamil song – in a film titled Pugazh , the music of which was launched yesterday. “We had to wait for almost six months for this recording to happen, but we’re happy with the feedback that people are now giving for the song,” says Mervin Solomon, who has composed the number along with Vivek Siva.

The music composer duo, who earlier worked on Vadacurry , was looking for a voice new to Tamil audiences, after coming up with the tune of ‘Neeyae’. “We are both huge fans of Arijit Singh and his songs in Hindi; we somehow wanted to rope him in,” recalls Mervin. “We were after him for a while and then lost hope. Suddenly, one day, he called us and asked for the track. He listened to it, and loved the melody – and immediately gave us the nod.”

Were the Tamil lyrics a challenge for the ‘Tum Hi Ho’ singer? “He worked hard on it,” says Mervin. “He wrote down all the lyrics in his mother tongue and kept checking with us if the pronunciation was good.” Apart from the Arijit Singh track, Pugazh , starring Jai and Surabhi in lead roles, has songs sung by Hariharan, Chitra and Anirudh.
