Silhouettes have swung from the extremely structured to the rebellious anti-fits. Seeking to combine the best of both worlds is Jayanti Reddy with her new collection, which she will present on February 4.

She describes her spring-summer collection as young and fun where blouses with stiff shoulders pair with fluid bottoms like drape skirts or dhoti pants. “I wanted to mix the comfort of fluidity as well as bring in some structured elements,” she says. There will be both fluid and structured capes, and lehengas. Indo-western is how she describes the collection titled ‘This one summer’.

Relying on summer palette of whites and beiges that allow some room for black, she is attempting a fresh take on monochromes. Initially she contemplated calling the collection ‘Monochrome Life’ and you can see why. The collection’s muse is a woman who understands that lightness and darkness are two sides of the same coin and she alternates between them, while being aware of the many shades of grey in between them.

Jayanti will present 16 ensembles and a sari that go easy on zardosi and threadwork. “Even the embellishments are kept minimal for stark summers,” she reasons.

Destination summer weddings

Making her debut at Lakme Fashion Week this season is Ashwini Reddy, with her collection inspired by the mythical ‘Tilottama’. “Mythological accounts have it that Tilottama represents the highest form of beauty. We’ve drawn inspiration from this idea of beauty to present a line that’s ideal for a summer, beach wedding,” says Ashwini.

Expect contemporary ethnic ensembles in organza, flowy soft cottons and silks in a palette beginning from ivory whites and moving to pastel pinks, lavenders and greens and finally culminating in bridal red for the show stopper.

Designer Ashwini Reddy

Ashwini is a B.Tech graduate who found her calling in design. She followed up a degree in fashion design at National Institute of Fashion Design, Hyderabad, with a course in design and styling from Italy.

In her debut collection, keeping with the idea of a destination wedding, she will present ensembles that re-look traditional bridal wear with resort sensibilities.
