Blockade suspended in Manipur

Updated - November 28, 2021 09:39 pm IST - IMPHAL:

The indefinite blockade imposed by the United Naga Council (UNC) against Manipur, with effect from Saturday, has been ‘suspended.'

A UNC spokesman said that the blockade was suspended because there was a glimmer of hope that the Union government would take a sympathetic view of the demands.

However, it would decide on its future course of action on the basis of the response from the Union government.

A truck was torched by the tribal miscreants along the National Highway 39.

Manipur was subjected to 113 days of blockade by the Naga outfits in furtherance of their demands. The Union Home Ministry had ordered deployment of CRPF along the highways to escort the trucks transporting essential goods to Manipur.

Sources said that the Union Home Minister had made it clear to the Naga outfits that unless the blockade was withdrawn, the government would come down with a heavy hand.

Following the suspension of the blockade, there were reports of free movement of trucks and buses along the two highways.
