Padma Shri presented to Sivapatham Vittal

Sivapatham Vittal, known as the ‘Father of Endocrine Surgery,' was awarded the Padma Shri by President Prathibha Patil on Friday at a function in New Delhi for his services in the field of medicine.

Dr. Vittal, instrumental in developing the speciality of endocrine surgery at the Madras Medical College (MMC) and pivotal in setting up the first such department in the country, was chosen for the B.C. Roy award in 1995 for developing surgical endocrinology.

He has edited and published a book on the subject.

Surgical tutor

He is the Surgical Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a member of the British Association of Endocrine Surgeons and has been honorary Secretary and the President of the Association of Surgeons of India and the International College of Surgeons, Indian Section.

Dr. Vittal has served as the Chairman of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Indian chapter.

In 2005, he was awarded the prestigious “Overseas Gold Medal” by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for his pioneering work in the field of Surgery and for his contribution to the College.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr. Vittal was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the 175th anniversary of the MMC in 2010 by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
