Motorists residing in Sowripalayam, Udayampalayam, Co-operative Colony, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and GV Residency are caught between the devil and the deep sea when it comes to travelling into the city.

The stretch from Puliakulam Vinayakar Temple to Kamarajapuram that passes through Kendriya Vidyalaya and Sowripalayam is severely battered. Motorists either have to travel on the pothole-filled road, irrespective of the damage to their vehicles and injuries to themselves, or else negotiate the stretch by facing the oncoming vehicles. The condition of the road has remained the same for the last several months.

The stretch near Sowripalayam and GV Residency is also very bad that the potholes are waiting to take a toll. While regular road users manage somehow, those driving on the stretch for the first time are caught unawares.

Thousands of residents earlier used this road for getting into core city areas avoiding the arterial Tiruchi Road and Avanashi Road because of the heavy traffic. But, thanks to the potholes that has remained unattended to for the last several months, motorists have no other option but to either opt for Avanashi Road or Tiruchi Road, notwithstanding the peak hour traffic.

Even the stretch from GV Residency to Tiruchi Road remains unmotorable. Jayalakshmi, a regular user of the road, says that due to the apathy of the official machinery, motorists not only risk their lives but also have to spend more on maintenance of vehicles that need frequent service after plying on terrible roads.

Ramesh, who holds a senior position in a leading manufacturing firm in the city, says the residents in the area have reconciled to the reality - either brave the potholes and risk your lives or else get into the thick traffic on the arterial roads. The road users want the Corporation to re-lay the stretch and make it motorable soon.
