Tourists and daily commuters using the Mettupalayam Road to go to Ooty or Periyanaikenpalayam, could soon be travelling on a wider road with flyovers.
The State Highways Department (NH wing) has prepared an estimate to widen the road from Narasimhanaikenpalayam to Kallar and have smaller flyovers (grade separators) near Saibaba Temple, Thudiyalur, Periyanaikenpalayam and Gounder Mills.
According to official sources, works will start on the Rs. 200 crore project after getting the Central Government’s approval.
The proposal is to have a four-lane road for 20 km from Narasimhanacikenpalayam to Mettupalayam, widen the road by 1.5 metres on either side for 10 km from Mettupalayam to Kallar and have a flyover near the Saibaba Temple.
The department is also studying the possibility of having such flyovers in three other locations on the stretch. The project does not involve land acquisition, the officials said.
When the project is completed, those travelling to Mettupalayam or Ooty can use the flyovers and those going to areas on either side of the road can use the existing road. A detailed estimate will be prepared for the project and submitted to the State Government to get the Centre’s approval and sanction of funds.
