Thai Poosam celebrated with fervour

Thai Poosam was celebrated here at the Marudhamalai Subramanyaswami Thirukoil on Tuesday. According to sources, as part of the festival, the devotees pulled the temple car. The festivities began with ‘Ko Pooja’ followed by special ‘abishekam’ for the presiding deity. Around 10 a.m., the devotees pulled the temple car, on which were placed the idols of Subramanyaswami and his consorts Valli and Deivanai.

A good number of devotees reached the temple carrying ‘kavadi’ and milk pots.

In Coimbatore, the Kotai Sangameswarar Temple car pulling festival was held. The temple car passed through Perumal Koil Street, N.H. Road, Big Bazaar Street to reach the temple. The Coimbatore City Police had provided security for the conduct of the festival.

Thai Poosam was also celebrated at the Linga Bhairavi temple at the Vellingiri foothills.

Elk Hill, christened thus because until a few decades ago it abounded with elks, came alive on Tuesday with thousands of devotees making a bee line to the Sri Bala Dhandayuthapani Temple situated atop the hill.

With the 11-day Thai Poosam festival of the temple concluding with a car procession organised by the Thirumuruga Keethigai Sangam, all roads in this hill station led to Elk Hill. The flower bedecked temple car was set in motion by a large number of devotees. One of the oldest and most important temples in The Nilgiris district, the Bala Dhandayuthapani temple also known as Maan Kundram is maintained by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Board. It was renovated a couple of years ago.
