Tripathi is the fifth MLA of the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party to be arrested.

In a major blow to Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party, its MLA Akhilesh Tripathi was arrested by the Delhi Police on Thursday.

A Delhi court on Thursday sent AAP MLA from Model Town Akhilesh Tripathi for custody in Tihar Jail after he repeatedly defied orders for appearance in a case filed in 2013.

The MLA was charged with rioting and criminal intimidation by the Delhi Police on a complaint.

Metropolitan Magistrate Kapil Kumar ordered the police to take the legislator into custody, “so that his appearance could be secured and the case be tried expeditiously as per the Supreme Court directions as it relates to a sitting MLA.”

The court had on November 23 issued an arrest warrant against the MLA for not appearing before it in the case. It had also issued an NBW against him on October 9.

“Many warnings were given to Tripathi not to send exemptions and to appear on time, but his conduct makes it clear that warnings of this court have no effect on him,’’ the Magistrate said.
