Two men were arrested on Wednesday afternoon from Hapur Chungi road in Ghaziabad for allegedly throwing acid on a 31-year-old woman in Sanjay Nagar on Monday, the police said.

They said woman was attacked over a love affair that had gone sour.

The accused have been identified as Rahul Garg and Umang Singh, both hailing form Kavi Nagar, Ghaziabad. The woman, who is married and has a son, had got into an extramarital affair with the accused.

“During interrogation, Rahul said he met the victim on the social media in October last year and kept on seeing each other on various occasions after that. After a few months, the accused suspected that the woman was married. When he asked her, she accepted to have been married and said she had a son too. Both had kept in touch even after that. In June this year, the victim also organised a party for the accused on his birthday at a three-star hotel in Ghaziabad,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (Ghaziabad) Vaibhav Krishna.

The police said that in July, the accused saw the woman stepping out of a man’s car at a Ghaziabad market. The man, the accused said, was not her husband and that he had spotted her with him two-three times more.

“Rahul went to victim’s house along with his friends and told her husband and in-laws about her relationship with him as well as the other man,” added Mr. Krishna.

“Around ten days ago, the accused planned a revenge and and asked his friend to arrange a motorcycle and some money. The two men drank together on Monday morning. They covered their face with scarf and helmet, and hurled acid on the woman in the evening and fled,” said Mr. Krishna.

Umang was riding the bike at the time of incident. Rahul threw the acid. An FIR was registered on Tuesday. The police have seized the motorcycle used in the crime, the clothes which they tried to destroy and the container from which the acid was poured.

The victim’s condition continued to be critical on Wednesday. She is undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.
