Works on Palair segment of the State Government’s prestigious Telangana Drinking Water Supply Project (TDWSP-Water Grid) christened “Mission Bhagiratha” are expected to get a major impetus with Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is all set to personally monitor the progress of the works at Palair reservoir in Kusumanchi mandal on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister will inspect the intake well at Palair, 90 MLD water treatment plant, and other components of the drinking water project at Jellacheruvu in Kusumanchi mandal on Tuesday morning before inaugurating the Bhakta Ramadasu Lift Irrigation Scheme at Erragadda Thanda in the same mandal later in the day.

The ambitious drinking water project envisages sourcing of water from the Palair balancing reservoir to supply purified drinking water to around 370 habitations in seven mandals in Khammam division and the Khammam Municipal Corporation limits at an estimated cost of ₹575 crore, benefitting a population of 7.34 lakh.

Water will be sourced from the Palair reservoir, which is fed by the Nagarjunasagar Left Bank Canal, in Kusumanchi mandal to cater to the drinking water needs of over 1,700 habitations in the neighbouring Mahabubabad and Warangal rural districts under the Mission Bhageeratha.

Minister for Roads and Buildings Tummala Nageswara Rao on Monday visited the Mission Bhageeratha project work sites at Palair in the district and near Madiripuram on Khammam-Mahabubabad district border to review the arrangements for the Chief Minister’s visit to the two sites on Tuesday. He inspected the ongoing works on the 170 MLD water treatment plant, considered the biggest WTP among all other segments of the project, near Madiripuram.

When contacted, the Minister told The Hindu that the Mission Bhagiratha drinking water project was conceived by the Chief Minister to provide safe drinking water to all the habitations covering the entire population by utilising the surface sources with a futuristic perspective.

Works on the Palair segment of the project are progressing at a brisk pace, he said, exuding confidence that piped drinking water will be provided to the households under the first phase of the project by June this year. The Bhakta Ramadasu Lift Irrigation Scheme, which has been executed in a record time, will find a lasting solution to the irrigation woes of farmers in the drought prone areas of Palair constituency, he asserted.
