Heavy rains continue to lash Hyderabad, normal life affected

Interspersed with small pauses, rains continued to lash the city for the second day on Thursday disrupting the normal daily routine for many.

Most parts of the city were hit by the showers and rain was reported to be heavy in some areas such as Himayatnagar, Gachibowli, Punjagutta, Lakdi-ka-pul, Habsiguda, Vidyanagar, Tarnaka, Uppal, Nagole, Moula Ali, Neredmet, Dr. A. S. Rao Nagar, Kushaiguda, Musheerabad and RTC cross-roads.

In most areas, the road corridors remained inundated with water affecting the movement of those venturing out braving the showers. Water was overflowing at Masab Tank, Raj Bhavan Road, Lakdi-ka-pul with wary vehicle drivers struggling to find a way out to reach their destinations.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) kept receiving complaint calls from across the city and the fleet of emergency teams remained busy attending to the calls.

“We have been getting calls since yesterday evening from different parts of the city and teams are dispatched to pump out water,” said an official of the GHMC central emergency cell. Two tree falls were reported, one near Fever Hospital Nallakunta and the another one close to Bible House in Secunderabad.

According to the Met department, the rainfall recorded till Thursday 8.30 a.m. in the city stood at 46.8 mm and since then traces were being recorded. With the sky conditions remaining cloudy, the weather forecast for the next two days looks at rains and thundershowers in the city.

KCR review on rains

The Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who is on a visit to China, on Thursday held a teleconference with ministers from the city and senior officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on the heavy rains that have been lashing the city for the last two days.

GHMC Special Commissioner Navin Mittal told the Chief Minister that the civic body was fully prepared to tackle the situation emerging from the rains with deployment of 86 emergency teams. The monsoon teams have so far cleared water stagnation at 227 different points and removed fallen trees at 26 places, he said.

Nearly 160 locations identified as water stagnation points by the traffic police were also attended to and the emergency teams were working 24x7 with required manpower and vehicles, Mr. Mittal told the Chief Minister.

Apart from control room in respective circles, the central emergency cell (Ph.21111111) was also on alert, he added.
