Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function here on Saturday, Mr. Satheesan accused the CPI(M) of appeasing both minority and majority communalism for temporary political gains. “What (Chief Minister) Pinarayi Vijayan is doing in the name of social engineering is religious appeasement, and the training was part of facilitating this,” alleged Mr. Satheesan.

He said there had been allegations even in the past about the influence exerted by communal organisations in the police department. “The CPI(M) should end this religious appeasement,” he said.

Mr. Satheesan said the CPI(M) was making appointments to key positions in the police department, leaving the force without control. “The police have been left toothless, giving free run to party leaders. This is a dangerous situation,” he said.
