Company entrusted with construction of waste-to-energy plant

The Kochi Corporation has deferred its decision on whether to lease the 20-acre land at Brahmapuram to GJ Eco Power Private Ltd, which has been entrusted with the construction of the waste-to-energy plant on PPP mode.

Differences cropped up among ruling and opposition benches when the issue was taken up for discussion at the council meeting on Saturday. A section of the Left councillors opposed the company demand for converting the concessional agreement into lease agreement. The company officials had said banks would not provide loans for setting up the plant, if it was a concessional pact. It had to be changed into a lease agreement to raise funds, they said. The councillors expressed doubts if changing the concessional agreement into a lease agreement would invite controversies.
