The CPI(M)-led government in the State is more interested in trying to gain the upper hand in the Sabarimala issue than post-flood rebuilding works, C. P. John, general secretary of the Communist Marxist Party (CMP), has maintained.
Addressing the media here on Friday in connection with the upcoming 10th congress of the party beginning on Sunday, he said the government’s priorities lay elsewhere when there was so much to be done on the rehabilitation front. There were no projects in any sector worth mentioning that would help people get back with life, he said.
“The State has suffered major losses in agriculture, poultry and cattle, but little has been done to help the people buy poultry or cattle to pick up their daily lives,” he said. Hand-holding was needed to help the small-scale industry to get going. Most of them had loans and they could not go to the banks again for yet another loan, he said.
Housing projects suffered much as the Life scheme had almost stopped post-flood. Of the one lakh houses to be built, fewer than 10,000 have been constructed, he said.
The CMP would take a new turn after the congress, he said. A public meeting at Marine Drive would be held on the first day that would be inaugurated by Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala.
Benny Behanan, UDF convener, will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural function of the three-day meeting.
The flag will be hoisted at MVR Nagar at the Town Hall at 9.30 a.m. on Monday where Mr. John will inaugurate the delegate’s meet and also move the political resolution. The organisational report will be tabled by C.A. Ajeer, State assistant secretary.
