The police made little progress on Friday in cracking the murder of the Dalit law student in Perumbavoor despite claims that they had zeroed in on the perpetrators.

The special investigation team has released all suspects in custody, except two. It is learned that a local resident and a migrant worker are the only ones in custody.

With tell-tale evidence lacking, the police now appear to bank on a pair of slippers, which they suspect to be that of the culprit. The slippers were put up on display out of hope that someone would recognise them.

The police also seem to have had little luck with the fingerprint samples. They had collected over 350 fingerprint samples of adult males from the locality, but it is learned that none of them matched the two samples taken from the crime spot. The police had also taken an autorickshaw driver into custody on Thursday, based on the statement of the victim’s mother, who remains admitted at the Perumbavoor taluk hospital. But he was released later. With the police pursuing the migrant worker angle, a team has been despatched to West Bengal on the trail of four migrant workers who had reportedly gone missing from the victim’s locality soon after the murder last month.
