Thousands of devotees witnessed the splendid ‘Dasavatharam’ enacted at Ramarayar Mandapam, on the fourth day of Lord Kallazhagar’s visit to Madurai city, as part of the Chithirai festival here on Monday.

The idol of the Lord was decorated with five avatars (Matsya, Kurma, Vamana, Rama and Krishna) as part of displaying the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu throughout the early hours of Monday.

Special pujas along with rituals were performed to the deity as ardent devotees assembled to witness the event.

At around 8.30 a.m., Lord Kallazhagar in ‘Mohini avatar’, draped in blue silk and mounted on His palanquin, made three rounds around the mandapam amidst thunderous applause and loud chants of ‘Govinda Govinda’ from devotees.

Soon after, He travelled on a floral palanquin to a mandapam in Alwarpuram, along the northern banks of Vaigai river, in the afternoon.

Legend

According to local folklore, after Manduka Maharishi sought redemption from sage Durvasa’s curse, by witnessing Lord Kallazhagar in all his avatars. Complying to the request, the Lord enacted the “Dasavatharam”, the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
