The new fire station opened near West Tower at Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai.

A new fire station for Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple was inaugurated on West Chithirai Street on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami inaugurated the fire station, through video conference, that was upgraded from an outpost.

While the outpost had only one officer and four firemen, the upgraded facility has a Station Fire Officer, two leading fire officers, two drivers, 11 firemen and a mechanic.

One fire tender will be parked permanently at the new fire station located near the West Tower.

With Chithirai Street free of any vehicular movement, it will be easier for the fire tender to reach any side of the temple in case of an accident.

The fire tender can enter the temple through East and West Chithirai Streets.

The fire that broke out inside Meenakshi temple on the night of February 2, 2018, destroyed several shops and damaged a portion of the temple structure necessitated the need for a full-fledged fire station.
