Elaborate arrangements have been made for the Azhi Ther festival of Sri Tyagaraja Swamy temple in Tiruvarur on Thursday.

The temple is noted for the grand car festival and the district administration, in coordination with various departments, has made arrangements for the smooth conduct of the festival.

The roads through which the car would be pulled have been marked with white paint allowing adequate space for the movement of the car. Devotees would not be allowed to cross the marking. The police, possessing a rope, would ensure a safe ring around the car.

Priority would be accorded for the safety of the devotees, said M. Mathivanan, Collector. As the celebration is being held five years after the temple car’s renovation, a large congregation of devotees is expected.

The ancient temple and the grandeur of the temple car had been hailed in religious literature by savants.

The decorated car would rise to a height of 96 feet and has been inspected and officials had been given specific assignments to ensure smooth conduct of the event.

The trial run of the car dedicated to Sri Chandikeswarar was conducted on June 8. On Wednesday, the cars dedicated to Sri Vinayaka and Lord Subrahmanya were drawn amidst religious fervour. The major event of Aazhi Ther, Sri Ambal Ther, and Sri Chandikeswarar Ther procession would be held on Thursday.

A local holiday has been declared on Thursday in the district in view of the festival.
