AUSPICIOUS START: Carnatic musician Sudha Raghunathan lighting the lamp at the inaugural function of 170th annual aradhana festival in Tiruvaiyaru on Friday.

A galaxy of Carnatic music personalities congregated beside the samadhi of Saint Tyagarajar as eminent vocalist Sudha Raghunathan lighted lamp to mark inauguration of 170th aradhana of Saint Tyagaraja at Tiruvaiyaru on Friday.

The annual aradhana is being organised by Sri Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha. Its president G. Rengaswamy Moopanar presided over the event. Former Union Minister and Chairman, Board of Trustees, G.K. Vasan, Collector A. Annadurai, and musicians were present.

Saint Tyagaraja attained mukti on the Pushya Bahula Panchami day in 1847 and the musicians have nurtured a tradition of rendering musical homage to the saint composer on that day by singing and playing instruments in unison on that day every year, when the actual aradhana is conducted. This year, the aradhana is to be performed on January 17.
