Bank employees affiliated to All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and Bank Employees Federation of India on Tuesday struck work in the district opposing merger of banks and in support of their other demands.

A demonstration was held here in which striking employees from various public sector banks participated and raised slogans in support of their demands. The one-and-a-half-hour demonstration in which about 300 employees took part was led by AIBEA district general secretary G. Ramaraju.

The striking employees also demanded that the Centre stop reforms in the banking sector, ensure recovery of bad loans and initiate stringent action on defaulters, increase interest rate on deposits, besides adequate recruitment in all public sector banks.

The strike was the result of a nation-wide call given by the two major bank unions. It was total with employees abstaining from work. There was no cash or cheque transactions in public sector banks, Mr. Ramaraju said adding that the strike had the support and solidarity of the officers.
