The over 80-year-old Golden Rock Railway Workshop here has been adjudged the Best Workshop (Rolling Stock) jointly with Jagadhari Workhop in Northern Railway for 2018-19 by the Railway Board, New Delhi.
The two railway workshops were adjudged the best among over 50 workshops functioning across the railway network based on a set of parameters laid out by the Railway Board. A shield was presented jointly to the two workshops by the Chairman of Railway Board Vinod Kumar Yadav at a function held in Mumbai on Tuesday.
Southern Railway General Manager Rahul Jain and Chief Workshop Manager of Golden Rock Railway Workshop P.N. Jha received the shield which would be kept on display at the Tiruchi workshop. This is the first time that the Golden Rock workshop, started during the British rule, has received this honour, said Mr. Jha. The parameters that were under scrutiny included safety measures at the workshop, compliance to targets fixed, status of certifications, staff training, funds utilisation and scrap disposal, he said.

In addition to its core activity of carrying out periodic overhaul of over 1,000 passenger coaches and more than 100 broad gauge locomotives every year, the workshop has also been manufacturing container wagons for Container Corporation of India besides overhauling locomotives and refurbishing passenger coaches operated on the scenic Nilgiri Mountain Railway section.
Authorities here said new container wagons rolling out from the workshop were being fitted on its exteriors with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags to ensure effective tracking. The workshop had bagged a fresh order for the manufacture of over 1,000 BLC-S type wagons for the Container Corporation of India with the works expected to commence in three months.
It was adjudged the best among the three mechanical workshops in the Southern Railway zone for 2018-19 a few months ago.
