K. Jennitha Anto has made Tiruchi proud again by winning the women’s title in the International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA) World Individual Chess Championship for the sixth time.
In the 19th edition of the championship at Slovakia, Ms. Anto scored five points from nine rounds to finish first among the women participants. The championship attracted around 40 players from various countries.
Having won the title consecutively for five times from 2013 to 2017, Ms. Anto has regained the crown. She had to settle for bronze last year. “The standard of competition is increasing every year. I am very happy to have won the title again,” she said.
Ms. Anto, who was afflicted with polio at the age of three, is a Woman International Master (WIM) title holder and aims at becoming a Grand Master.
Her father G. Kanickai Irudayaraj thanked the Sports Authority of India and Mission International Medals Scheme (MIMS) of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu for the support being extended to Ms. Anto.
She was given a warm reception on her arrival in the city on Monday with Collector S. Sivarasu felicitating her at the airport. Sports enthusiasts and Makkal Sakthi Iyakkam members led by its state advisor K.C.Neelamegam were among those who received and honoured Ms.Anto at the airport.
