Collector S. Sivarasu, along with A. Mayilvaganan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, inaugurated a Road Safety Club in association with District Road Safety Council at Bishop Heber College here on Saturday.
Speaking at the inauguration, Mr. Sivarasu said all colleges and schools must have similar clubs and observe Road Safety Week, through which awareness programmes must be conducted. He urged the students to wear helmets and to create awareness among their friends and neighbours of its importance as a means for protection and not as a rule.
S. Thiyables Stephen Smith, coordinator, Road Safety Club, Bishop Heber College, said the club, which had been functioning informally for a few years, would spearhead awareness programmes across the city. “Our aim is to ensure zero road accidents and urge residents to observe road safety rules as a way of life and not fearing punishment. We will work actively with the police department and NGOs to organise awareness programmes regularly,” he said.

The Road Safety Club in the college has 300 active members who conduct bike rallies, programmes in schools and colleges and organise seminars where doctors, advocates, Regional Transport Officers and other stakeholders hold discussions.
N. Ravichandran, Corporation Commissioner; M. Sekaran, member, District Road Safety Council; K. Umasakthi, Deputy Commissioner-Transport; and officials of the police department and Regional Transport Office took part in the event.
