A group of pro-Kannada organisations protesting over the Mekedatu dam row on Saturday forced Nataraj Theatre to cancel the show for Tamil movie Valiyavan released on Friday.
The protesters staged a dharna outside the theatre, shouting slogans against the Tamil Nadu government. Some even tore posters.
The Sheshadripuram police rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters. The theatre management convinced the protesters and promised to cancel all shows for the day.
“The protesters were furious that we were running Tamil movies despite the brewing tension between the two States over the dam issue. We were told not to air the shows. Otherwise we would not have done it,” a member of the theatre management said.
The Sheshadripuram police rushed to the spot and took around 60 persons into preventive custody. Earlier, Kannada Chaluvali Paksha Vatal Nagraj led a protest at Mysore bank circle opposing the Tamil Nadu government’s statements opposing the dam issue.
Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Alok Kumar said that security arrangements have been provided in areas where Tamil population are residing. We have also deployed security for theatres playing Tamil movies and have intensified patrolling in sensitive locations, he said.
