Come Saturday and Bangalore University will be “officially” functioning as three separate universities. However, faculty members and students have not been intimated about this transition. The State government on Thursday issued a notification stating that Bengaluru Central University and Bengaluru North University will function as separate entities from 2017-2018.

This comes 22 months after a gazette notification was issued regarding the trifurcation of the university.
On Friday, Jawaid Akhtar, Principal Secretary, Higher Education Department, convened a meeting with special officers of the two new universities and officials of the parent Bangalore University to discuss how the trifurcation would be implemented.
He said that the faculty members would be given the option to choose which varsity to work for. .
The department will also evolve criteria on how the transfer of staff would take place.
For the time being, Mr. Akhtar said that the parent university will provide funds for the day-to-day functioning of the varsities.
A concrete plan will be chalked out to get a principal amount for each of the other universities.
While students will be admitted to various postgraduate programmes by Bangalore University, they will later be transferred to Bengaluru North and Bengaluru Central universities based on jurisdiction.
Ramachandra Gowda, president, Federation of Universities Teachers’ Association in Karnataka, said that the faculty were divided on which university they would stay with.
“We have not been informed that the trifurcation is official. Some faculty members whose departments are in central college will opt to stay with the Bengaluru Central University, while others will move to the parent university,” he said. He also said that the faculty members will have to make the decision based on the availability of the departments.
Currently, Bengaluru Central University has six departments, while Bengaluru North has five departments.
UVCE’s fate
The century-old University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), which currently has most of its departments in K.R. Circle and a few departments in Jnanabharathi, is likely to fall under the jurisdiction of Bangalore University.
While sources in UVCE are worried that they might have to shift to the Jnanabharathi campus, department officials said that there was currently no plan to shift the institute.
