The city police announced the arrest of 475 persons in connection with a total of 502 cases that were cracked across various police stations coming under the North, West and North-East police divisions in the city over the last six months. The police recovered valuables worth Rs. 8.61 crore, including some 18 kg gold.
At a property parade here on Monday, the police said the arrests were carried out in connection with cases of robbery, burglary, chain-snatching, house break-ins and vehicle thefts.
As many as 191 persons were arrested by the North division police in connection with 236 cases and valuables, including 6.36 kg gold and 17.23 kg silver, Rs. 2.32 lakh cash, 138 vehicles, 28 laptops and nine cell phones, estimated to be worth Rs. 3.4 crore, have been seized.
Similarly, 83 persons were arrested by the North-East division in connection with 65 similar cases and valuables worth Rs. 1.96 crore was recovered, including 4.3 kg gold and 1.3 kg silver, Rs. 23 lakh cash and 20 vehicles among other items.
The West Division Police also arrested 201 persons after cracking 336 cases including burglary, house theft, robbery, chain snatching and vehicle theft. They have recovered stolen items estimated to be worth Rs. 3.25 crore including 7.33 kg gold and 8.36 kg silver items along with Rs. 6.47 lakh cash and electronic items.
Home Minister K.J. George, who attended the parade along with Police Commissioner Raghavendra H. Auradkar, appreciated the efforts of the police force to recover the properties.
Following the string of thefts on Sunday where five citizens in the city were duped of their gold jewellery on their person by a gang of four tricksters, who had gained notoriety for repeatedly conning the public by posing as the police, Mr. George instructed the police to to track down the gang.
