The work to construct a three-lane bridge parallel to the Thiru Vi Ka Bridge across the Adyar river commenced on Wednesday.

Inaugurating the work, Highways Minister Vellakoil Saminathan said that the State government was making efforts to ease traffic congestion in the city by constructing bridges and flyovers.

333 metres long

The Rs.13-crore bridge across the Adyar river would be 333 metres long and 11 metres wide and is being constructed in the space between Thiru Vi Ka Bridge and a dilapidated bridge.

One side of the new bridge would have pathway for pedestrians.

On completion, it is likely to ease traffic congestion on the stretch connecting Adyar and Santhome, which is now choked with vehicles during rush hour.

The Thiru Vi Ka bridge was constructed in 1973. The Chennai Corporation will make efforts to acquire land, including from Dr. MGR-Janaki College and Andhra Mahila Sabha, for widening Durgabai Deshmukh Road, Mayor M.Subramanian said. This would be crucial in easing the congestion on the stretch, he added.

More bridges

Highways Secretary G. Santhanam said that the government would shortly give sanction for construction of bridges in more locations that have been identified.

Work on the bridge in Moolakadai-Perambur junction would commence in January at an estimated cost of Rs.49.55 crore. The flyover-cum-subway project on Nelson Manickam Road-Periyar EVR Salai junction would commence in February.

Thirumangalam junction

The Minister added that work on the flyover-cum-subway project at the Thirumangalam junction will commence in 10 days. The 737-metre-long facility would be constructed at a cost of Rs.60.22 crore and would facilitate smooth flow of traffic across two intersections – Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue and Mogappair Road junction on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai.

The work is scheduled to be completed in 15 months.
