The newly-constructed building of the Peravallur police, located at the intersection of Venketasan Salai and Siva Elango Salai in Jawarhar Nagar near Perambur, has been meticulously planned.
The rainwater harvesting system alone can be a powerful testimony to that. It is connected to the recharge wells. The lighting around the premises is adequate. The visitors’ area is fetching.
Above all the factors, there is a vast space around the new building, and by the look of it, the space can easily accommodate one hundred two-wheelers and a dozen cars and jeeps.
However, the Peravallur police continue to dump seized vehicles including mangled autorickshaws, cars, motorcycles in the Open Space Reservation (OSR) land, located opposite the police station across Siva Elango Salai on Fifth Main Road in Jawarhar Nagar.
“The OSR land is meant for a children’s playground or a park for the residents of the neighbourhood. Due to dumping of vehicles, the land has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and reptiles. Many residents hesitate to take up the issue with the local police,” says S. Ramnath, a resident of Perambur.
Three years ago when the new building for the police station was completed on the same premises along with a spacious housing quarters for police personnel, residents said that they thought the police would relocate their ‘belongings’ (the seized vehicles) from the OSR land to the station premises as the police building had been constructed. But, the Peravallur police remained quiet on the issue even as residents occasionally raised the issue during awareness meetings organised by the police with residents. Interestingly, the police personnel at the multi-storey police housing quarters, which is located opposite the police station on Fifth Main Road in Jawarhar Nagar, opted to have their main entrance of the quarters on Siva Elango Salai rather than opposite the OSR land due to the foul smell coming from the garbage dumped in the open plot.
Most of the open space reservation (OSR) lands in the neighbourhood are used as dumping grounds, say residents.
“Steps will be taken soon to relocate the seized vehicles from the open land soon,” police sources said.
