Chennai Metrowater will continue to supply 550 million litres a day (mld) till March with the available resources, Municipal Administration Minister S.P.Velumani said here on Thursday.

He was reviewing the progress of various water supply projects in urban areas and the water situation in Chennai. He said about 30 mld of water would be drawn from abandoned quarries in Sikkarayapuram at a cost of ₹11 crore. Besides drawing water from 350 agricultural wells in Tiruvallur district, additional tankers would be hired for ₹47 crore.

Smaller vehicles with a 2,000-litre capacity would be used to supply water to houses in narrow lanes. Infrastructure would be created to draw water from Erumaiyur quarries and sink 171 new borewells in various parts of the city.

Chennai’s water supply would be augmented by 56 mld through nine borewells in Neyveli Paravanar basin and lakes in Retteri, Perumbakkam and Ayanambakkam.
