The Greater Chennai Traffic Police conducted yet another special drive to rein in food delivery personnel and booked over 300 cases against them for violating traffic rules besides imposing fines.

There are several mobile app-based food and grocery delivery services operating in the city. With the demand for such services going up, the number of food delivery personnel engaged by the aggregators has increased correspondingly. Due to the nature of payment terms, most food delivery partners flout traffic rules that include signal violation, wrong side driving, driving without helmet, using mobile handsets while driving and over speeding in an attempt to earn more, endangering their lives and the lives of other motorists.
In order to curtail these violations, a special enforcement drive was conducted on March 30, focusing on the food delivery partners found violating traffic rules. During this special drive, 978 cases were registered and fine amount totalling ₹1.35 lakh was imposed.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Kapil Kumar C. Saratkar said the company-wise details were taken and the pending case details with the particulars of violators were forwarded to the in-charge of the companies and in person during the meeting conducted on April7.
On Friday, a similar drive was conducted. A total of 365 cases were registered and fine amount totalling ₹48,300 imposed. “On analysis, it is found that the effort of the traffic police to curtail violations of delivery personnel is working. However, the special drive is intended to create awareness and deter the delivery personnel from breaking traffic rules. The drive will continue,” said Mr. Kapil Kumar.
