The Chennai Corporation cancelled tenders for road projects in several areas of the city after contractors failed to submit records pertaining to the bids.

Work on at least 650 roads in areas such as Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam and Alandur will be delayed because of the cancellation.

The civic body had finalised tenders, issuing work orders for 1,947 roads in 15 packages for zones such as Tondiarpet and Royapuram in September.

Package number 1 covered roads in wards in such as Kodungaiyur, Vyasarpadi, Korukkupet, New Washermenpet and Pudupet. This tender has been cancelled by the Chennai Corporation.

Rules flouted

The tenders for relaying 314 roads in zones such as Teynampet, Valasaravakkam and Alandur have also been cancelled after the tender conditions were not fulfilled by the contractors.

Relaying of roads in areas such as Nolambur, Maduravoyal, Alapakkam, Ramapuram, Nandambakkam, Nanganallur and Madipakkam will also be delayed.

Residents associations and NGOs have been protesting against the State and line agencies over the past few years, pointing to several of the city’s civic issues.

Poor coordination of civic bodies delayed the implementation of projects.
