Bengali actor Pijush Ganguly passes away

Noted Bengali actor Pijush Ganguly, who was critically injured in an accident last week, passed away at a city hospital on Sunday. He had worked in several Bengali films, television and theatre. Mr. Ganguly (50), a household name for his work in daily soaps, is survived by wife and a son.

“Mr. Ganguly died at around 2.30 a.m. due to multi-organ failure,” said a senior official of the Belle Vue Clinic where he was admitted. He was put on ventilator on Saturday after his condition became critical. Mr. Ganguly’s condition deteriorated to such an extent that doctors had to cancel his operation which was scheduled to take place on Saturday afternoon.

Mr. Ganguly and dancer Malabika Sen were injured when their vehicle collided head-on with a bus at Santragachi in Howrah district October 20. The incident took place when they were returning to Kolkata after a show. Ms. Sen is now out of danger.

He had also made his mark on the silver screen in films like ‘Gaynar Baksho’ by Aparna Sen, ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’ by Anjan Dutta and ‘Autograph’ by Srijit Mukherjee and ‘Anshumaner Chhabi’ by Atanu Ghosh.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed grief over Mr. Ganguly’s death. “Shocked and saddened that actor Pijush Ganguly died. He was close to us and very talented. My condolences to his family. RIP,” she twitted.
