‘People’s right to choose any religion being infringed upon’

KOZHIKODE: Muslim political, social, and religious organisations in a joint statement here on Monday accused the Sangh Parivar of deliberately trying to stop the propagation of religious faith in the State.

They urged the government to take a fair stand in the case related to the arrest of 39 activists of Wisdom Global Islamic Mission in Ernakulam on the charge of distributing pamphlets “meant to disrupt communal harmony”.

In the statement, the leaders expressed concern over what they termed “efforts to destroy religious amity”. They said Sangh Parivar activists had organised people after circulating a fake news in social media that a group of people had arrived at Moothakunnam to destroy a temple, though Wisdom activists had come there to distribute pamphlets. Wisdom activists were attacked on the premises of the police station. Though the police let them off after they were convinced of their innocence, the activists were arrested allegedly at the behest of Sangh Parivar activists, they claimed.

The Muslim leaders alleged that while the government opposed the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in public, it was implementing its ideals. The police are infringing upon people’s constitutional right to choose any religion and propagate the ideals of that religion, they said.

The joint statement was issued by Panakkad Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal (Indian Union Muslim League), Bahauddin Mohammed Nadvi Kooriyad (Samastha), T.P. Abdullakkoya Maudany (Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen), M.I. Abdul Azeez (Jamaat-e-Islami), Kunhimohammed Maudany Parappoor (Wisdom Global Islamic Mission), A. Najeeb Moulavi (State Jam-Iyyathul Ulema), Thodiyoor Mohammed Kunhu Moulavi (South India Jam-Iyyathul Ulema), Abul Khair Moulavi (Tableegh), P.A. Fasal Gafoor (Muslim Education Society), and P. Mammad Koya (Muslim Service Society).
