Updated - November 17, 2021 04:08 am IST - Abuja:

Gunmen targeted a church service in northern Nigeria, killing six persons including a pastor during a midnight attack on Christmas-eve.

The building housing the Evangelical Church of West Africa at Peri village in Yobe State was also set ablaze, police said.

Militants from a fundamentalist Islamic sect, Boko Haram, have killed thousands of people in northern Nigeria since 2009. They have repeatedly targeted worshippers in churches.

The sect wants to install an Islamic government in northern Nigeria where Muslims are in a majority.
