The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Union of India and the Medical Council of India on Wednesday jointly assured the Supreme Court that they were willing to hold the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admissions to medical and BDS courses for the academic year 2016-17.
A Bench of Justices Anil R. Dave, Shiva Kirti Singh and A.K. Goel responded positively and asked them to submit the proposed schedule by noon on Thursday. Indicating that it would pass a decisive order, the court asked for a responsible officer of the CBSE to be present in the court during the hearing while emphasising that the officer should be authorised to take “spot decisions.”
The development follows the April 11 decision of the court to recall its 2013 judgment declaring the entrance test unconstitutional.

Three years after it disqualified the NEET — a single common entrance test system for MBBS, BDS and post-graduate medical courses — as an interference in the right of State and private medical colleges to administer, the court had agreed that its decision required reconsideration.
The court is set to review the NEET system afresh.
