The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Centre and Press Council of India (PCI) on a plea for setting up an independent mechanism to regulate content of television channels.

A bench of Chief Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi sought response from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and Law Ministry on a PIL alleging that misleading and superstitious contents were being broadcast by the channels and there is no regulatory body to oversee it.

The bench passed the order on the PIL filed by NGO, Hindu Jagriti Samiti, seeking intervention of the apex court in the issue.
