U.S. for joint fight against terror

The U.S. has condemned the terrorist attack on the Indian Air Force base in Pathankot, and “urged all countries in the region to work together to disrupt and dismantle terrorist networks and to bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous act.”

In a statement, State department spokesperson John Kirby said: “The United States is committed to our strong partnership with India to combat terrorism.”

The U.S has always maintained that Pakistan requires to do more to rein in terrorists who target neighbouring countries. The U.S has also been pressing Pakistan for action against perpetrators of Mumbai terror attacks. However, at the same time, the U.S would like India and Pakistan to continue their dialogue. The U.S.’ call to the “countries in the region to work together” to tackle terrorism has to be seen in this light.

Washington had welcomed the recent turnaround in India-Pakistan relations. It considers better relations between India and Pakistan good for its South Asia strategy and is keen that the latest terror strike does not disrupt the renewed talks between the two countries.
