Activist from Manila deported

Immigration authorities at the Mumbai Airport on Sunday night deported the general secretary of the Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (AFAD), Aileen Bacalso, after she arrived in India from the Philippines.

Despite having all necessary documents she was sent back and told by the immigration authorities that “she herself knew the reasons of her deportment.”

“I had all my documents and I had no idea that I would be deported like this. I was not even told the reason for their refusal to let me enter India,” Ms. Bacalso told

Ms. Bacalso (51) is an award winning human rights activist who has worked on enforced custodial disappearances in several countries across the world, including Kashmir.

Ms. Bacalso said she had applied for an Indian visa on August 11 at the Indian Embassy in Manila, but the authorities told her that it would be better to get a visa on arrival since it was too late to process her documents from there.
