Haj panel confirms death of one Indian in stampede, helpline established

The State Haj Committee, Hyderabad has confirmed that one person hailing from Hyderabad died in the stampede which occurred at Jadid Street in Mina in Saudi Arabia on Thursday morning.

The committee informed that 5,451 pilgrims from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh travelled to Haj this year. Of these, 2,978 are from Telangana, 1,819 from Andhra Pradesh and 654 from Karnataka, said Haj Committee chairman S.A. Shukoor.

The committee established a 24-hour helpline number 040-23214125 for the convenience of family members of pilgrims in both the states to track their whereabouts. The Indian Consulate General in Jeddah too has set up 24-hour helpline numbers 00966125458000 and 00966125496000. In addition to this, there is a toll-free number 8002477786.

According to authorities, Indian pilgrims stay in Souq-al-Arab Street and Jawhara Street, while the stampede occurred at Jadid Street. The consulate said it had not received any reports of Indian pilgrims being affected in the incident.
