Guntur city’s spinning mills, located along the Grand Trunk Road, can now look forward to some momentum going their way with ongoing road-widening projects connecting the Grand Trunk Road to National Highway-16.

The city, situated at the crossroads of the North-coastal and Rayalaseema regions of the State, can also look forward to better highway connectivity as the Guntur Municipal Corporation takes up road-widening and double-laning of major arterial roads at Etukuru and Chuttugunta.

Spurt in growth

The projects will trigger rapid development on either side of the road, with areas like Nallacheruvu and Etukuru set to benefit the most from the direct connectivity.

Yet another road which has been widened up to 120 feet is the road leading to the highway from Chuttugunta. The road links all government offices, the Tobacco Board and the Spices Board offices to the National Highway.

“Highway connectivity is set to improve with the double laning of these two roads. The two roads with a central divider and adequate lighting will be the pride of the town and we have also given a facelift to the town,” said Municipal Commissioner Srikesh B. Lathkar.

Other vital connecting roads such as the Palakaluru Road is being widened to 120 feet. Work commenced during the tenure of former Municipal Commissioner S. Nagalakshmi, and is now nearing completion. The third phase of the Inner Ring Road, for which land acquisition is in progress, would further boost connectivity.

The Inner Ring Road has now emerged as a vital connecting link to Vijayawada, though the road has been dug up for UGD works.

Some hurdles

The only bottleneck is in Nallapadu from where there is no direct road connectivity to the town.

Though commuters have been using the DRM Road, the road stretch at Syamala Nagar has not been widened. The DRM Road-Syamala Nagar Road is a 60-feet road linking the area to Stambalagaruvu and Gujjangundla. With the GMC not taking up widening of the road from Stambalagaruvu, the narrow road continues to be a bottleneck.
