The body of Greyhounds Reserve Inspector G.V. Prasad, who was killed by Maoists as retaliation to the Tuesday’s encounter near Puvarthi forest area in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, was left abandoned by the rebels near Kavurugatta village under Pamedu police station limits in the neighbouring Chhattisgarh on Saturday evening.
Sources said that the villagers of Kavurugatta brought the body of Prasad to Pamedu in a tractor trolley following the intervention of some representatives of Adivasi organisations late in the evening, ending the impasse over the release of the body by the rebels.
The body was subsequently shifted to Charla in the Bhadrachalam division late in the night. The release of the body by the rebels came at a time when tension mounted along the Andhra Pradesh-Chhattisgarh border owing to deployment of large contingents of the police forces to trace out the body.
The Maoists put up a wall poster near the site from where the body was left behind in the forest area. Sources said that the rebels warned the security forces against conducting combing operations in the forest areas.
The body will be handed over to the family members of the deceased Greyhounds inspector after conducting a post-mortem at Bhadrachalam hospital tonight, said Superintendent of Police A V Ranganath.
The body will be shifted to his native Visakhapatnam district by road after paying homage, he said
