A year after Sarabjit Singh crossed over to Pakistan and was sentenced to death in a serial bomb blast case in 1991, another Indian, Kirpal Singh from Gurdaspur, was also arrested for spying.
Kirpal Singh crossed the border in 1992 and was arrested on charges of bomb blasts and spying for India. He was sentenced to death. Later, Pakistan’s High Court acquitted him in the bomb blast case, but didn’t rescind his death sentence in the spying case.
Singh is still in the Lahore jail, where Sarabjit was attacked by other inmates. It was Kirpal’s sister Jagir Kaur, who had time and again raised the issue. But her pleas went unheard.
Ms. Kaur said, her brother was also lodged in the death cell of Kot Lakhpat Central Jail in Lahore and spent more than two decades there.
Her family couldn’t raise its voice for Singh’s release due to financial constraints and no politician came forward to plead the case, she said.
Ms. Kaur appealed to the government to take up brother’s release.
