Security has been heavily beefed up in the city after the Delhi Police received inputs about the possible presence of two Jaish-e-Mohammed militants in the Capital.

Police sources said they have learnt about the possibility of two or more terrorists having sneaked into Delhi in the wake of the strike on Pathankot air base by the banned outfit.

The militants are believed to be planning attacks on some high-profile targets in Delhi and may also take hostages, the police have learnt.

The inputs were followed by the Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi calling a meeting of the force’s top officers on Sunday morning. The officer then went on to tweet to the public to stay vigilant against suspicious objects and people’s activities.

“Citizens' vigil against suspicious persons/objects/activities is vital to counter terrorism. Report anything amiss no. 100 or helpline 1090,” Bassi tweeted.

Meanwhile, an officer privy to the meeting said the police have sought the deployment of central paramilitary forces at certain locations and outside important establishments in the city.

While the Capital was already on high alert since the Pathankot terror attack, the latest inputs have led to police deploying a large number of its personnel outside the airport, railway stations and bus terminals and outside certain government establishments.

Police presence has also been increased at all the popular markets and in the VIP movement zones. All vehicles entering Delhi through various borders are being thoroughly checked before being allowed to pass.

A senior police officer said the police were conducting security checks “everywhere” and “anti-terrorist action” were being taken to combat any kind of terror activities.

Since there are specific inputs of VIPs being on the terrorists’ radar, Delhi Police’s elite units such as the crime branch and special cell have been roped in to come up with a strategy to deal with the potential threats.

Last Tuesday, NSG and SWAT commandoes, along with the Delhi Police, had conducted mock drills at several malls, hotels and shopping complexes in Delhi. Police said they would conduct more such mock drills over the next couple of days to test the alertness and readiness of the security forces.
